Description

BASEBALL The Bulle Dozers A story of bases and balls A national phenomenon on one side of the Atlantic, unknown on the other, this strange sport lives on in our country. In Bulle, a group of friends founded a club 33 years ago. A batter, a pitcher, bases, and people running around a square yelling English words: it's called baseball. The Dozers are currently leading the championship. But yes, baseball exists in Switzerland, in Bulle in particular. If you don't believe it, go for a walk on Sunday afternoon behind the Bouleyres football stadium. You might stumble upon a match between the Bulle Dozers and the Fribourg B'52s. You will see that these weird-looking weirdos (tight trousers and striped tunics) look just like the "real ones you see on TV": cap (of course), leather glove (essential to avoid breaking your hand), bat (a kind of long, blunt object) and small white ball

Since 1997, the people of Bulle have even had their own playing field: in the jargon, it's called the diamond. Birth of the club In 1991, a group of friends, returning from the United States, got together to throw a few balls. From the initial five or six, the group quickly grew into a dozen enthusiasts. Once the rules were assimilated, and the technical moves more or less mastered, the friends were able to form a real club. In 1994, the Bull'Dozers (the name was quickly chosen) joined the seventy other teams of the Swiss Baseball and Softball Federation (the women's equivalent). But, tired of the long travel and increasingly stringent rules, the French-speaking teams left the group and founded their own association two years later. Today, seven teams participate in a championship governed by the French-speaking Baseball Federation. There are two teams in Monthey, one each in Sierre, Geneva, Lausanne, Marly/Fribourg, and Bulle. Since last year, a junior competition has been organized. For several years now, the Bulle Baseball club has been an ambassador in Fribourg.
